What Should You Include in a Talent Casting Brief?

Whether you’re casting for a commercial, photoshoot, social media campaign or wider advertising project, a good casting brief can make all the difference. The clearer the brief, the easier it is to find talent who genuinely fit what you’re looking for. But what actually needs to go into one?
Start With the Basics
First, explain what the project is and who it’s for. A short description of the campaign, brand and overall concept gives a casting agency a better understanding of the type of talent that will work. Then, get specific about who you’re looking for. Think about the age range, gender, appearance and number of people required. If you’re looking for a family, couple, group or a particular type of model or talent, make that clear from the start.
Don’t Forget the Practical Details
The date and location of the shoot are essential. Include the expected working hours and whether talent will need to travel. If travel expenses or accommodation are covered, mention this too. It’s also worth explaining what talent will be expected to do on the day. If the project involves acting, sport, dancing, driving or another specific skill, including this in the brief helps ensure the most suitable talent can be put forward.
Be Clear About Usage
One of the most important parts of a casting brief is explaining where the finished content will be used. Will it appear on social media, a website, in print, on television or as part of paid advertising? Include the intended platforms, length of usage and geographical area wherever possible. This helps talent fully understand the booking and how their images or footage will be used before they commit.
Include the Budget and Casting Process
Finally, provide details of the fee, usage or buyout, expenses and any overtime arrangements. You should also explain how you’d like talent to be submitted - whether that’s through photographs, portfolios, measurements, self-tapes or auditions - and give a clear deadline.
A great casting brief doesn’t need to be complicated. It just needs to give enough information for a casting agency to understand your project and find talent who suit the campaign.
